Kaikodo Journal IV
The Landscapes of Li Huayi
Corresponding to the exhibition held between May 19 and June 7, 1997. 13 paintings from San Francisco based artist Li Huayi (13 color plates and additional color details). Preface by Howard Rogers. 82 pages.
Includes the essays:
Howard Rogers:
“Beauty, Poetry, Truth and Vision: On the Evolution of Chinese Landscape
Painting from the 8th to the 12th Century”
Arnold Chang:
“Substance, Surface, Spirit, and Space: On the Landscapes of Li Huayi”
Two essays accompany Li Huayi’s works not to “explain” the paintings, which in and of themselves are visual statements of the highest order, but to outline the context within which their complete meaning and significance becomes evident. Howard Rogers presents the historical context in which Li paintings might be understood and Arnold Zhang addresses the life and times of Li himself. Accompanying the illustrations of Li Huayi’s paintings are quotations intended to enrich the viewing experience through either similarity or contrast of conception. Mary Ann Rogers and Arnold Chang selected these from both historical Chinese and contemporary Western writings so as to present as broad a range of commentary as possible.
