Kaikodo Journal I
Inaugural Exhibition and Sale of Chinese and Japanese Art
Corresponding to the exhibition held between March 23 and April 20, 1996. 45 early Chinese and Japanese paintings; 36 early Chinese objects (81 color plates). Preface by Howard Rogers. 211 pages.
Although a sales exhibition, an attempt was made in a number of catalogue entries to go somewhat beyond the piece at hand to explore larger questions suggested by the the form and decor, style and iconography of the objects and paintings as well as the lives of the artists when appropriate, an initial approach to sales catalogue entries that would result in more comprehensive scholarly studies over the years. It was hoped that a proper emphasis would be accorded the works themselves and that the additional material would prove of further use to students and collectors.
