Kaikodo Journal XXVII Spring 2011

Asian Journeys

Corresponding to the exhibition held between March 18 and April 28, 2011. 35 Chinese, Korean and Japanese paintings; 25 Chinese, Vietnamese and Koreans works of art (62 color plates). Preface by Howard Rogers. 183 pages.

Includes the essays:
David Menke:
    “Remembrance: John Menke (1919-2009)”
Richard A. Pegg:
    “Imperial Touring and the Empire:
MacLean Collection Maps of the Qianlong Era”

This issue of Kaikodo Journal includes a moving tribute by David Menke to his distinguished father John Menke who passed away in 2009.  John and his wife, David’s mother, were avid collectors of art, distinguishing themselves particularly in having acquired stunning ceramics, three pieces featured in the present Kaikodo Journal representing the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean focus of the collection. The theme of journeys, weaving the paintings and objects together through time and space, also implies both route and goal, and these constitute the raison d’etre of the maps that are the subject of the essay included here by Richard Pegg entitled “Imperial Touring and the Empire: MacLean Collection Maps of the Qianlong Era.” Dr. Pegg is Curator of the MacClean Museum in Libertyville, Illinois, which boasts not only an admirable range of ceramics and metalwares but also maps of various types and in different media.
