Kaikodo Journal XVI May 2000

By Design: The Art of Tseng Yuho

Corresponding to the exhibition held between May 9 and June 9, 2000. 25 paintings by the Honolulu-based artist Tseng Yuho (Betty Ecke) (25 color plates with additional color details). Preface by Howard Rogers. 77 pages.

Includes the essays:
Tseng Yuho:
“Notes on My Life and Art”
Melissa Thompson:
    “Gathering Together the Pieces of
    Dsui Hua”
Stephen J. Goldberg:
“The Art of Tseng Yuho: An
    Appreciation”

The catalogue for this exhibition is graced
with three illuminating essays, each dealing
with various aspects of the life of the artist,
the evolution of her art, and the special
characteristics of her technique and style of
painting. Most germane is of course the essay
by the artist herself, one in which Tseng Yuho
recounts significant markers in her personal
and professional life. This material is given
added point and perspective by an interview
with the artist conducted by Dr. Michael Martin,
Dean of Faculty at the University of Hong Kong,
that is being published in the May issue of
Orientations to coincide with the exhibition in
New York. The catalogue essays by Melissa
Thompson, Assistant Professor in the
Department of East Asian Studies at Colby
College, and Dr. Stephen J. Goldberg, Assistant
Professor of Asian Art at Hamilton College, give
very valuable historical, art-historical and
aesthetic perspective on the paintings of Tseng
Yuho.  The journal’s preface by Howard Rogers provides a narrative on the life of the artist.
